Rawai is another coastal resort at the Southern part of Phuket Island. It doesn’t have the same tourist numbers as areas like Patong and Karon, and part of the reason for this is its quite remote location. It also doesn’t have a fantastic beach like some of the other resorts, but there are many close by easily accessible by car, bus or scooter.
You will however find great seafood in Rawai within the Gypsy village situated in the far corner of Rawai. One of the popular options is Gypsy @ Rawai where you can purchase your seafood and they will cook it for you. Being a small fishing village, there is a plentiful supply of reasonably priced, fresh and great quality seafood on offer, making this a favourite for people that enjoy great seafood on the island at reasonable prices.
Rawai has also become quite a hub for Muay Thai, with many of the best training facilities located in the area. This sport has now become even more popular with Westerners following the growth of MMA, and there are also many MMA stars that come to the island to train from the US. A couple of the popular gyms include Rawai Muay Thai and Lion Muay Thai, which are both growing in popularity.
For those tourists that visit Rawai there are several great attractions close by, such as Big Buddha which is located in nearby Chalong, Phuket Sea Shell Museum which features the world’s largest golden pearl and also the amazing Prom Thep Cape for some breathtaking scenery, with fantastic beaches the other side of the mountain.
Getting around is quite easy with a the new Smart Bus which goes to and from the airport, but many do prefer to rent a scooter whilst staying in the Rawai area.
